Weight loss services
Our practice is currently unable to prescribe weight loss medications such as Mounjaro® or Wegovy®. These are only available through specialist NHS services.
At the moment, there are no NHS services available that we can refer you to for weight loss injections. However, we can still refer eligible patients for weight loss (bariatric) surgery if needed.
Why can’t I get these medications from my GP?
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended these medications as part of a structured weight loss programme that includes clinical supervision, education, and lifestyle changes.
Due to high demand and limited supply, the NHS is introducing these medicines through a phased national programme, prioritising patients with the greatest clinical need. This ensures:
Reduced pressure on NHS services
Safe prescribing with medical oversight
Access to appropriate education and support services
Sufficient time for healthcare professionals to receive training
What’s the current status of these medications?
Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) is currently only prescribed for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss.
Semaglutide (Wegovy®) is only available through specialist Tier 3 or 4 weight management services, not from general practice.
